Book Review

Living Whole without a Better Half

After agreeing to read this book I knew that I was up against a challenge because this book was written the single woman.  For over 33 years now I have been married, so I’m thinking that I just might not be the one qualified and knowledgeable in this domain to judge such a book or its contents on the subject.

Yet at my grand surprise this book was not at all the kind of book that I was expecting. In fact what was I expecting after all? I don’t really know! Maybe a woman feeling sorry and whining, finding it not to be what she expected or wanted. Sadly, it is mostly what I have met and heard from the women I have around me in the same situation. Oh! But this book is so far from that.

I was pleasantly surprised by most of this book, in the manner in which I saw a  woman who was captivated  by the challenge of God, and chose to live day-to-day by staying in the race that was set before her, and live the challenge. Singleness! She lives it by faith and grace, one moment at a time, which only God can grant her. She does not presume that it is easy, but she says that it is not a curse, but a beautiful diamond from the hand of God himself. It’s precious.

From the start, she is clear of how often people believe falsely that God will grant them a spouse. Yet, it’s not true, she affirms that nowhere in the Bible is it promised that. And she is right!  She clarifies all sorts of little things and phrases that people say to singles. While some people having good intentions and wanting to be nice and encouraging, will say phrases that are old clichés more than anything else and more often even non-biblical. Thus, only giving false hope.

Widder is very candid and direct in her way of writing. She has a sense of humor that is nice to read and at the same time I found that she doesn’t neglect to tell us what she would like, but has not yet happened. She doesn’t deny her feelings, yet she doesn’t let them control her life. That’s why she’s a model to follow in this road not so easy to go by that we call singleness. Bravo!       

Here is a wonderful quote from her book – “If there’s no joy in singleness, there won’t be joy in marriage either. Joy is not the fruit of  “favorable” circumstances. Rather, it is the outpouring of a contented heart.”

In every chapter she uses biblical characters to make a parallel with the life of singleness (her own), which gives us an example. This helps us to make a link in our own lives even though one might be married (like me). So, while helping us to learn and discover more profoundly about many biblical characters she is also helping us learn more about those who are learning to live alone and how we can better help them along the way.

I really appreciated the book more than I thought I would. I think what I appreciated most of this woman was her attitude of gratitude. She really touched me in her outspokenness and in her hearts desire to live to please God despite her own fleshly desires.  It is hard for me to completely understand this since like I’ve said before, for over 33 years we’ve been married now!  Yet I fundamentally believe like she says that we all have a longing to be loved and search for our beloved. But God alone can first fill this need in our hearts that is unique for Him alone.

A great read for women that need to be encouraged in their walk no matter where they find themselves or what age they are. I don’t regret accepting to read this wonderful book at all. I understand more the life of single women and I also regret some things I’ve said in the past to a few people… sorry. I’ve enriched my life greatly by reading this book!

Lorsque j’ai accepté de lire ce livre, je savais que cela allait être un défi pour moi puisque ce livre s’adresse aux femmes célibataires. Je suis mariée depuis 33 ans, donc je me disais que je ne m’y connaissais vraiment pas dans ce domaine et que je suis loin d’être qualifiée pour juger à savoir si ce livre est bon ou non à ce sujet.

Pourtant, à ma grande surprise, ce livre n’est pas du tout le genre auquel je m’attendais. En fait, à quoi m’attendais-je au juste? Je ne sais pas trop! Peut-être à une femme qui se plaindrait un peu de sa condition. Car la plupart du temps, tristement, c’est ce que j’entends des femmes dans la même situation. Mais loin de là.

J’y ai plutôt trouvé une femme qui a su relever le grand défi que Dieu a choisi de mettre sur sa route jusqu’à ce jour : le célibat! Elle le vit un jour à la fois, avec la foi et la grâce que seul Dieu peut lui accorder. Elle ne prétend pas que c’est toujours facile, mais elle dit que ce n’est pas une malédiction, mais un beau diamant de la main de Dieu. C’est précieux.

D’entrée de jeu, elle éclaircit le fait que trop souvent les gens croient que Dieu va leur accorder une épouse ou un époux. Mais, c’est faux. Nulle part dans la Bible, il ne nous est promis une telle chose, dit-elle. Et c’est tout à fait vrai. Elle démystifie plein de petits trucs de ce genre. Elle a dû faire face, avec les années, à des gens de bonnes volontés qui essayaient de l’encourager par des phrases clichées qui sont loin d’être bibliques et donnent de faux espoirs.

L’auteure est très franche et directe dans sa façon d’écrire. Elle a un sens de l’humour qui est agréable à lire et en même temps j’ai trouvé qu’elle ne néglige pas de dire ce qu’elle aimerait, mais qui n’est pas encore arrivé. Elle ne nie pas ses sentiments, mais elle ne les laisse pas diriger sa vie. Voilà ce qui fait d’elle un modèle à suivre dans cette vie pas facile à vivre qu’on appelle la vie de célibataire. Bravo!

Voici une traduction libre que j’ai bien aimée – « S’il n’y a pas de joie dans le fait d’être seul, il n’aura pas plus de joie dans le mariage. La joie n’est pas le fruit de circonstance “favorable”. Mais bien plus l’épanchement d’un cœur satisfait. »

Dans chaque chapitre, elle utilise des personnages bibliques pour faire un parallèle avec la vie de célibataire et se donne en exemple, ce qui est chouette. Cela nous aide à faire un lien dans nos vies qu’on soit marié ou pas. En nous faisant découvrir des personnages bibliques plus profondément, elle nous aide à comprendre mieux les personnes qui sont seules pour mieux les aider ensuite.

Ce que j’ai aimé le plus, c’est l’attitude de gratitude de cette femme. Elle m’a vraiment touché dans sa franchise et la volonté de son cœur d’aimer et vivre pour Dieu, au-delà de sa propre vie et de ses désirs charnels. Je ne peux même pas comprendre, puisque je suis mariée depuis plus de 33 ans! Mais je crois, comme elle dit, que fondamentalement, c’est difficile puisque nous voulons tous être aimés et cherchons à être avec un être cher. Mais seul Dieu peut combler notre besoin premier et unique.

À ma connaissance, je ne crois pas que ce livre soit traduit encore en français, ce qui est vraiment dommage puisque je n’ai pas encore vu ce type de livre de cette qualité. Espérons qu’il sera traduit sous peu. Il en vaudrait la peine selon moi.

Un excellent ouvrage, pour la femme qui a besoin d’être encouragée dans sa marche, peu importe son âge, et où elle en est dans son cheminement. Je ne regrette aucunement d’avoir accepté de le lire, car je comprends mieux maintenant les femmes qui sont seules. D’autant plus que je reconnais avoir dit des choses pas très agréables qui ont pu les blesser… désolée.

Memorial: The Mystery of Mary of Bethany

I’ll be honest, when deciding whether to read this book I had to go beyond the title and read everything I could that was written about it and the author since the title in itself just didn’t bring it home for me. I even visited her blog. In essence it didn’t hook me in. But, after reading one paragraph into the introduction,  I was hooked, fish line and all.

Dolores Kimball is an excellent writer. It doesn’t take long before we quickly see how she makes the point of carefully delivering home the mystery behind the story of Mary of Bethany to us. She does so in a comprehensive fashion that is clear, precise and biblical. We clearly see that much research was done along with many serious hours of studying in order for us to be blessed and edified while reading. Her study is based mainly on these three passages in the Gospels that describe this incident about Mary of Bethany in; Matthew 26: 6-13, Mark 14: 3-9, and John 12: 2-8 each having different details and nuances.

She doesn’t deliver this to us in a messy tangle sort of way of course. Everything is just perfectly unified and thoughtfully planned out. She has thought out all her avenues before hand and graciously makes our reading plan easy. Thus making it smooth for us to understand the mystery. Every detail is important and revealed just at the right moment. The way she helps us to understand it and points us to them is wonderful. It puts everything into perspective. Of course I don’t plan on revealing all these things to you … the ideas is to read her book, which is awesome and worth the few dollars it cost! You’ll love it.  This book is solid in biblical theology and very encouraging.

I have read other books that talk of Mary of Bethany along with her dear sister Martha, and have enjoyed them greatly. Yet I must admit that this one has put many new things into perspective because of all the different aspects that were being brought into light. Kimball’s arguments are strong and mad me re think on many things that I thought I knew and believed. I love it when an author is able to do that with the Word of God, not her words. That’s powerful and changes my view because of the Word, not because of what she says!!!

What I also loved from the author is that she applies it to us as women today.

What and how can Mary’s actions inspire us today?

I mean really that is wonderful because isn’t that what we need as women, being practical in our lives. Learning from the women of the Bible. I don’t have expensive oil that I can spread on the feet of Jesus Christ and then whip it with my hair.

But yet, how can I in my life be or act like Mary of Bethany?

Can I really be like her somehow, and is that even possible?

Those are practical questions she looks at and I think that it’s something we are all really asking ourselves deep down.

I love this quote from her book “She understood that poverty of spirit means we come to Jesus with nothing of worth to offer him, needing everything from him.”

I greatly appreciated her Epilogue also because I fundamentally found encouragement to go back to the Word of God. As she says herself, read the passages and let the Bible interpret the Bible.

One word of caution in reading, I found that the author permitted herself at times to interpret on how Mary or Martha might have felt during certain moments, and even other characters. I find this delicate to do when writing since it is not in the text, but I understand that her point is to highlight a situation at hand. Although to give the author credit, she does specify it every time she does this that these are speculations on her part and are nowhere in the text. I believe this is very authentic of her, yet it still could be misleading for some readers.

A small remark that I did found somewhat annoying because it came up quite often was that she often repeated this phrase; “we will explore this in dept in a later chapter” or something like this.  This got tiresome when reading because I was always waiting or wondering if she got to it finally.  Maybe it’s just the writer in me!

Over all it’s an good book and you just might learn a couple of new things about a biblical character you thought you new very well but really didn’t know that well after all… who knows!

Lets say that white lacy gloves are not something that Ginger Hubbard wears while writing nor does it describe her writing style! Yet, this does not disqualifier her in any way. In fact it might just add credibility being as our culture is so open to our somewhat “make me feel good” Christianity lifestyles. Her words are straightforward and to the point. They speak right at the heart of the problem when talking about sin.

If you think that you’ll be reading a book fluffed up with sugar coated icing to make it easier to swallow the truth, you’ll be disappointed. I loved it! I mean how else do you want it? Yeah, I know, unfortunately some seem to want the truths of the Word and the realities of our sinful hearts diluted for whatever reason. I guess it makes it easier? But the Word of God is many times piercing and harsh to read.

Ginger writes with candor, authenticity, with great clarity while revealing her true sinful nature to us straightforward. Therefore placing her in a position to be criticized publicly for her unbiased honesty. I admire this from an author, what audacity! You clearly see from the start that she takes no pride in rendering herself like this but dose it for the sole purpose of helping others so that they can identify and relate in some way. She offers her stories and struggles with sin for Gods glory. Attaching biblical passages and stories to help us get an even clearer idea of the whole perspective of the sin at hand. I loved how she manages to blend her life examples applying them to biblical truths in passages that are all familiar to most of us.

Her humor in a sense helps us to identify to her, making it easier to bring us into a position of comfort and being thus capable of even admitting we also might have the same sinful problem and wickedness in our hearts… just maybe!

Her examples are plain simple everyday things, yet they hit home because that’s exactly where we are most vulnerable to sin many times. The little things, those we think don’t matter too much or those we neglected to pray for. Hubbard just brings them out into the open and plainly says what many of us think but never dare say! This does take courage to expose your self and be vulnerable to critiques from readers for reasons that only they know… and she’s had then.

It’s a book that will not leave you indifference towards sin. It will bring conviction from the Holy Spirit because lets face it, we all sin and that’s whey we’re in need of a Savior. What was most encouraging was to be reminded of the grace of God in and despite the fact that we will sin till the day we die. Even though the subject is convicting and you come face to face with certain realities through examples, verses from the Bible and the Spirit working while you read, you’re also encouraged greatly by the victory found in Christ.

Frankly I found this author to be quite encouraging. Loved her deep love for the truth of the Word and how she brings it so alive. Always enjoy discovering new authors, and this one is a keeper!

Disons que mettre des gants blancs en dentelle n’est pas le style d’écriture de Ginger Hubbard. Pourtant, cela ne la disqualifie d’aucune façon, au contraire, cela ajoute à sa crédibilité. D’autant plus que c’est nécessaire pour notre culture tellement ouverte à « Je dois me sentir bien dans la vie chrétienne ». Ses mots sont francs et vont droit au but. Elle va directement au coeur du problème lorsqu’on parle du péché.

Si vous pensez lire un livre qui est couvert de glaçage sucré pour ainsi faire en sorte qu’il soit plus facile à avaler la vérité, vous serez déçu. J’ai bien aimé! Comment dire, y a t’il une autre façon de désirer? Oui, je sais, malheureusement, il y a des gens qui désirent que la vérité de la Parole et le péché dans nos vies soient dilués pour je ne sais quelle raison. Je suppose qu’on s’imagine que cela rendra les choses plus faciles. Mais la Parole de Dieu est bien des fois perçante et dure à lire.

Ginger écrit avec une grande franchise, authenticité et clarté tout en nous révélant sa nature pécheresse de façon très directe. Par le fait même la place dans une position d’être critiquée publiquement pour son honnêteté impartiale. J’admire cela chez un auteur, quelle audace! Nous pouvons voir dès le début que ce n’est pas une question d’orgueil. Elle se livre de cette façon pour que les gens puissent s’identifier à elle dans ses luttes et ses histoires contre le péché. Elle s’offre pour la gloire de Dieu. En y attachant des passages bibliques et des histoires pour nous aider à avoir une meilleure idée et une bonne perspective du péché dont elle nous parle. J’ai bien aimé la manière dont elle fait s’entremêler les exemples de sa vie avec certains passages de la Bible qui nous sont à peu près tous familiers.

Dans un sens, son humour nous aide à nous identifier à elle, faisant en sorte qu’il nous est plus facile d’être confortable (moins défensif) et de nous amener à être plus disposés à admettre que nous aussi avons peut-être ce même problème dans nos cœurs… peut-être!

Ses exemples du quotidien sont simples. Elle tombe dans la mire, car c’est là que la majorité du temps nous sommes plus vulnérables de pécher; des petites choses, celles dont nous ne pensons plus ou négligeons d’apporter dans la prière. Hubbard les apporte à la lumière simplement et dit ce que la majorité d’entre nous n’oserait jamais dire en réalité! Ceci prend énormément de courage pour s’exposer de cette façon et ainsi se rendre vulnérable à la critique des lecteurs/lectrices pour des raisons que seuls eux connaissent… et elle en a reçu.

C’est un livre qui ne vous laissera pas indifférent face aux péchés. Il vous apportera une conviction de l’Esprit-Saint puisque, admettons-le, nous sommes tous pêcheurs, c’est pourquoi nous avons besoin d’un Sauveur.

Ce qui a été des plus encourageant pour moi c’est d’être rappelé de la grâce de Dieu et cela en dépit du fait que nous pécherons jusqu’au jour de notre mort. Malgré que le sujet est de source culpabilisante et qu’on vient face à face avec certaines réalités à travers des exemples de la Bible ainsi que l’œuvre de l’Esprit, nous sommes grandement encouragés par la victoire qu’on trouve en Christ.

J’ai trouvé cet auteur d’un grand encouragement. J’ai aimé son amour pour la vérité de la Parole et la manière dont elle la fait prendre vie. J’aime découvrir de nouveaux auteurs, et celle-ci, je la conserve dans mes favorites!
