Ruth : la loyauté et l’amour

Quelle magnifique histoire d’amour et de loyauté nous retrouvons parmi ces pages de notre Bible! Cette histoire est précieuse pour plusieurs raisons. J’aime la manière dont MacArthur nous en parle dans le premier paragraphe: « Toutefois, il contient toute la gamme d’émotions, allant du chagrin le plus déchirant au sentiment de triomphe éclatant ».1

En lisant cette histoire, on se rend bien compte que rien n’a été facile! Ce n’est pas une histoire à l’eau de rose, mais plutôt un vécu jalonné de grandes souffrances accompagné de grandes pertes, mais qui finit en beauté!

Ce qui ressort de la vie de Ruth, c’est qu’elle a su observer en silence la vie de sa famille durant des années. C’est ce qui l’a probablement amené à connaître Dieu et Lui faire confiance, et cela malgré toute la détresse et le parcours familial. Nous voyons que malgré le fait qu’elle a grandi dans une culture païenne elle s’est néanmoins attachée au Dieu d’Israël. Ce qui nous montre que le témoignage de Naomi et la famille ont eu un impact dans sa vie. Ruth n’avait aucune idée de la fin de cette histoire. Contrairement à nous qui le découvrons en lisant son parcours dans notre Bible aujourd’hui.

Elle a marché par la foi, par amour et par loyauté envers un Dieu qu’elle a connu tranquillement à travers la vie de sa belle-mère. Elle écoutait et observait les conseils de sa belle-mère, car elle savait que Naomi connaissait le Dieu d’Israël. Ruth lui faisait confiance et elle désirait lui faire du bien et la servir. Quel beau geste d’amour!

Nous voyons cela par son obéissance à Naomi en faisant tout ce qu’elle lui demande. Ruth ne questionne pas Naomi et elle s’exécute avec précision. Elle a fait un geste vraiment hors norme culturellement en allant vers Boaz. Ceci égalait à une demande en mariage! Un acte assez audacieux.

Personnellement, ce récit biblique est un de mes préférés dans la Parole de Dieu. Je suis toujours encouragée de lire ces quatre chapitres. Qui sait, peut-être un jour Dieu me donnera la possibilité d’écrire un livre sur ce sujet! Je trouve qu’il y a des perles de bénédictions cachées dans ces petits chapitres. Il faut juste les lire attentivement avec une loupe…

Pour moi, ce qui me touche dans cette histoire de prime abord, c’est l’engagement de Ruth qui semble être envers sa belle-mère, mais plus nous regardons l’histoire de plus près, plus nous voyons que c’est envers le Dieu d’Israël.

Deuxièmement, c’est touchant de voir l’espoir pour un cœur souffrant et la bonté de notre Grand Dieu qui restaure ses enfants. Pas toujours au moment et comme nous le voudrions, mais selon sa souveraineté. Il faut rester attaché à Lui et à Sa volonté pour nous, comme nous le voyons clairement dans la vie de Ruth.

Je me questionne à savoir si dans les tourbillons de mes souffrances, j’ai la même loyauté que Ruth, moi qui connais le Dieu d’Israël. Moi qui ai la Parole pour le connaître très intimement ainsi que son Esprit qui m’habite! Et vous, que répondez-vous?

Ruth: Loyalty and Love

This is a wonderful story of love and loyalty that we find among the pages of our Bible! This story is precious for many reasons. I love how, right in the first paragraph, MacArthur says this: “Still it runs the full range of human emotions, from the most gut-wrenching kind of grief to the very height of glad-hearted triumph.”1

If you read it correctly, nothing in this story is easy! It is not a Cinderella story, but rather a story of sufferance accompanied by great loss that does finish in beauty because of God’s grace.

What does come out of Ruth’s life is that, it seems, for many years this woman has learned to observe in silence her stepmother’s family, which most probably has caused her to learn much about God and have confidence in Him, this among all the distress this family has been through. We see this because despite the fact that she was brought up in a pagan culture, she nonetheless became attached to YHWH. This demonstrates that the testimony of Naomi and her family had an impact on her life. Unlike us, Ruth had no clue how this story would end, because she had no Bible.

She walked by faith, love and loyalty before a God she hardly knew, slowly yet surely, through the impact and example of the life of her mother-in-law. She listened to her and followed her counsels because she knew that Naomi knew the God of Israel. Ruth had confidence in her and wanted to please and serve her. What a beautiful gesture of love!

We clearly see this when she obeys Naomi without hesitation when asked to go towards Boaz. This gesture was way out of bonds in that culture; it would equal a marriage proposal! Quite an audacious act.

Personally I find this biblical account to be one of my favorites in the Word of God. I am always so encouraged to read these four chapters. Who knows, maybe one day I will write a book on that subject! I think it’s filled with pearls and blessings that are hidden in every chapter. You just need to read them with great attention and a large magnifying glass…

What stands out mostly for me in this storyline is Ruth’s engagement right from the start towards her mother-in-law, but most of all, when you look at the storyline carefully, you see that it’s towards the God of Israel himself.

Secondly, it is encouraging to see the hope that one can find in sufferance, to see the blessings of our great God who restores his children. Not always like we would like it and when we desire it, but according to His sovereignty for us. Yet, as we fully see by Ruth’s life testimony, we need to stay attached to Him and His desires for us.

I ask myself: in the turmoil of my sufferance, do I have this loyalty towards God, like Ruth had towards YHWH?

Me, I have the Word of God and His Spirit living intimately in me!

Rahab : une vie honteuse rachetée

Il est intéressant de voir comment j’ai pu me reconnaître dans certains aspects de chacune des femmes que nous avons vues à ce jour. Et vous?

Je ne peux pas m’identifier littéralement à la vie de Rahab. Par contre, moi aussi, à un moment donné dans ma vie, Dieu a touché mon cœur et l’a disposé à croire en Lui! Car comme Rahab, mon cœur était aussi pécheur et avait le besoin d’être sauvé par YHWH.

J’ai tellement aimé voir comment John MacArthur met l’accent sur le fait que même si Rahab avait menti en disant que les espions israélites n’étaient pas chez elle, la question du texte biblique n’est pas là. Il y a eu bien des débats et des suggestions à ce propos pour en arriver à certaines conclusions. Par contre, le point crucial reste le même, elle a menti. Je le cite : « Je ne vois pas la nécessité de tenter de justifier le mensonge de Rahab. Était-ce nécessaire de mentir pour accomplir un grand bien? Certainement pas. »1

Ce que nous arrivons à comprendre est que Rahab est nouvelle dans sa foi et elle connaît à peine son Dieu, YHWH. Elle est, de ce fait, encore très influencée par la culture corrompue reliée à son entourage et son métier de prostituée. Peut-on s’attendre à plus d’une nouvelle croyante? Elle fonctionne encore sous son ancien mode de vie, sa vieille nature comme un pilote automatique, je crois.

MacArthur le dit bien :

« Elle est, et sera toujours un symbole vivant de l’effet transformateur de la foi salvatrice.

C’est là le message principal de la vie de Rahab ».2

Encore une fois, je retiens bien des leçons qui m’encouragent énormément de cette merveilleuse femme dans la Parole. La plus grande leçon sans contredit est que malgré une faible connaissance de notre Dieu, nous sommes toujours un outil qu’il peut utiliser pour Son royaume lorsqu’on le laisse nous guider. Elle en est la preuve malgré ses faibles connaissances de son Dieu. Rien n’est impossible à notre Grand Dieu!

Rahab: A Horrible Life Redeemed

It’s interesting to note that, since the beginning of our study of this book, I have been able to identify myself with every single woman that we have seen so far (up to a certain point). How about you?

Despite the fact that I cannot identify with Rahab’s immoral life style, I can certainly identify with the fact that I have been touched in my own life by the almighty God himself, and he has prepared my heart to believe in Him! Like Rahab, my heart was sinful and in great need of being saved by YHWH.

I love how John MacArthur places the emphasis on the fact that, even though Rahab did lie in saying that the Israelite spies were not in her home, the biblical question isn’t about her not telling the truth. Many debates and suggestions have been alleged about this passage, and we could come to our own conclusions. Yet, as it stands, she lied. I quote him: “I see no need to try to justify Rahab’s lie. Was it necessary for a greater good? Certainly not.” 1

What we finally come to understand is that Rahab is new in her faith and she hardly knows her God, YHWH. She is, on the other hand, still very much influenced by the corrupted culture that surrounds her, and she has been a prostitute all her life. Can we expect more from a person who has been under such influences all her life and becomes a believer because of what she has heard from Israel about God’s dealing with them? She responds in her old nature, as an automatic pilot would; it was a natural way of responding, I believe.

However, we do see that there is an action when she does refuse to act on automatic pilot. That gesture is recognized by her faith! She hides the spies and gives them a friendly welcome. This simple gesture put her life in danger, and she did not hesitate at all. Most of all, this admirable gesture serves to glorify God and to put the emphasis on the God of Israel!

By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

Hebrews 11: 31

MacArthur says it well:

“Rahab is a beautiful example of the transforming power of faith. Although she had few spiritual advantages of the truth, her heart was drawn to YHWH.” 2

Again, I am left with a wonderful lesson; the life of this woman in the Word of God greatly encourages me. Yet the biggest gift of all is that, despite our lack of knowledge of our Lord, He can and does use us for His kingdom and His glory, when we let Him drive our lives. She is proof that lack of knowledge is not an excuse when it comes to serving the Lord. Nothing is impossible to our God!

Sara : espérer contre toute espérance

****Enfin, voici la deuxième partie, qui en principe devait être en ligne pour le 25 septembre 2015, mais qu’il ne m’a pas été possible de respecter à cause de circonstances incontournables dans ma vie!!! Je m’excuse et je vous remercie de tout cœur pour votre compréhension à cet égard. Je fais de mon mieux pour respecter les dates que je vous ai données, mais parfois la vie ne va pas toujours comme nous l’avions planifiée!!!

Au départ, je peux déjà vous dire que Sara et moi avons quelques petits points en commun! Je vais tout de même me réserver le droit d’avoir une petite gêne ici et ne pas révéler tous mes petits défauts, mais je peux imaginer que je ne suis pas la seule à s’identifier à Sara!?

Je n’ai pas aimé lire ces paroles de John MacArthur, mais cela m’a fait réfléchir :

« Mais en lisant le récit biblique de sa vie, il est impossible de ne pas remarquer qu’elle a parfois un mauvais comportement. Elle pique des crises, elle est manipulatrice, et elle sait même être méchante. »1

Par contre, j’ai aimé la façon dont il fait ressortir non seulement le bon côté, mais les deux côtés de cette femme. En fait, ce qu’il y a de bon en elle vient de la grâce de Dieu et de Son œuvre en elle. Ceci m’a beaucoup encouragée, car c’est la même chose pour nos vies à nous! Sans l’œuvre rédemptrice de notre Sauveur à la croix, il n’y a aucun espoir de changement véritable pour nos vies.

Comme nous, Sara avait de grandes forces accompagnées de grandes faiblesses. Cela à cause qu’elle était une femme pécheresse, ce que nous sommes aussi chères sœurs! Donc comme elle, notre cœur peut parfois nous induire en erreur.

Nous avons vu dans ce chapitre que Sara est passée à travers toutes sortes d’épreuves et que sa foi a faibli par moment. Mais à la fin de tout, Sara est citée dans la Parole comme une femme de foi.

« C’est par la foi que Sara elle-même, malgré son âge avancé,

fût rendue capable d’avoir une postérité,

parce qu’elle crut à la fidélité de celui qui avait fait la promesse. »

                                                                                        Hébreux 11 : 11

Comme c’est encourageant! C’est là que nous voyons que c’est vraiment à cause de Christ et de Son œuvre qu’elle a pu accomplir et réussir ce que Dieu lui demandait et non par ses propres forces. Car nous avons vu à plusieurs reprises que Sara tentait de prendre les choses en main et de gérer la situation, mais sans résultat. Sommes-nous différents de Sara à cet égard?

La promesse que Dieu avait faite à Abraham a fini par s’accomplir, mais pas au moment où elle s’y attendait. Plusieurs années se sont écoulées depuis que Dieu avait fait cette promesse à Abraham. Car elle a eu son enfant à l’âge de quatre-vingt-dix ans !!

Enfin, ce que je retiens le plus dans ce chapitre, c’est que je suis moi-même capable et parfois très vite pour agir comme Sara et prendre les choses en main. Quoique je n’aie pas une promesse officielle de la part de Dieu, j’ai sa Parole qui me guide et me garde chaque jour. Cela devrait être suffisant pour m’empêcher de douter, m’égarer et m’inquiéter lorsque tout semble s’écrouler autour de moi. Ma fondation doit rester seulement sur la Parole de Dieu et non sur les gens et leurs opinions! Parfois, je doute parce que je me préoccupe davantage de l’opinion de ceux qui m’entourent que sur ce que la Parole en dit. Suivre les voies de Dieu implique la Foi et un renoncement à soi-même et à notre bien-être!!! Ce n’est pas facile, enfin pour moi, mais c’est possible par Christ qui vit en MOI!

Sarah: Hoping Against Hope

*****At last, here is the second blog which was supposed to be posted on my website the 25th of September 2015. Due to uncontrollable circumstances in my life, it was not possible!!! I am extremely sorry and do appreciate your understanding and comprehension towards this situation. I am doing my best to respect the dates that I have given to you; unfortunately life doesn’t always go as we have it planned out!

To begin with, I want to say that Sarah and I have quite a lot of things in common! Yet I will refrain myself from revealing all of my imperfections and stay somewhat shy with my flaws. Yet I can imagine that I am not alone to identify myself with Sarah?!

I didn’t like reading this quote from John MacArthur:

“But reading the biblical account of her life, it is impossible not to notice that she sometimes behaved badly. She could throw fits and tantrums. She knew how to be manipulative. And she was even known to get mean.” 1

I did however like reading how he revealed to us both sides of this woman, and not only her good side. In fact, what is good about her comes from the grace of God and His work in her. This is what encouraged me greatly because it’s the same thing in our lives: without the redeeming work of our Savior at the cross, there is no hope of real change in our own lives.

Like us, Sarah had great strengths and great weaknesses. That was because she was a sinner like we are also, dear sisters! So, like her, at times our hearts are inclined to error.

We also saw in this chapter that Sarah went through many difficulties, hardships of life, and that her faith grew weak at times. Yet in the end, Sarah was cited in the Bible as a woman of faith.

By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

Hebrews 11:11

This is so encouraging! This is where we see that it was really because of Christ and his work in her that she was able to accomplish and do all of what God had demanded of her, and it did not depend on her own strength. Despite the fact that we did see at certain times Sarah try to take things into her own hands and control certain events and situations. Aren’t we like Sarah in certain situations in our lives?

The promise that God made to Abraham is accomplished in her life, but not at the time expected. What I mean is: ninety years old to have a baby sort of seems late! Many years went by before God accomplished his promise made to Abraham.

What I retain most from this chapter is that I am as quick and capable as Sarah to act and take control of things in my own personal life. Despite the fact that I don’t have a personal promise from God, I do however have the promises of the whole Bible to guide and keep me every day. That in itself should be enough to keep me from doubting, wondering, and worrying about my own life, when things seem to be crumbling around me. My foundation should be on the Word of God and not on the people around me. Nor should it be on their opinions about me or the situation! Sometimes I doubt because I am too preoccupied with their opinion rather than what the Word says. Following God implies faith, and a relinquishment of oneself and of pleasing yourself!!! It’s not easy, at least not for me. But it is possible, with Christ who lives in ME!
